Yesterday’s heat broke July record

Temperatures narrowly missed the highest temperature ever recorded in Jersey – 36°C – on
9 August 2003.

Back then, Blu Cantrell and Sean Paul’s Breathe was number one, Tony Blair was the UK Prime Minister and George W Bush was the US President.

The warm weather is due to continue, with 27°C forecast today and 28°C forecast for tomorrow.

Joe Waudby, duty forecaster for Jersey Met, said that the figures were a result of a number of unusual conditions coming together at once.

‘To get the extreme temperatures that we saw so far above average yesterday, you need certain things to all come into line – so that is why it happens so rarely,’ he said.

‘Yesterday, we had a column of warm air being drawn up from right down in North Africa and at the surface we have had south-easterly winds bringing in the air which has been sat over France – it had been up to 40°C in parts of France.

‘Today, it is similar conditions but the hottest air has moved more to the east and down at the surface we get westerly winds so we get the air that has been sat over the sea rather than France.’

Mr Waudby added that sea temperatures were also above average for this time of year – currently around 18°C.

lMeanwhile, Jersey’s new trampoline park Jump Jersey at Les Ormes was forced to close early yesterday as a precaution because of the heat. Affected guests were given refunds or moved to different slots where necessary.
