Smuggler ordered to leave the Island

Grzegorz Kaminski admitted one charge of fraudulent evasion of Customs duty before the Magistrate, Bridget Shaw. Kaminski was found in possession of 9,800 cigarettes, 72 litres of beer and three litres of vodka which he did not declare when he arrived by ferry from St Malo on 13 July.

Kaminski told officers the items were to be delivered to ‘unknown persons’ in exchange for £2,000 and that he needed the money as his wife needed an operation.

Advocate Francesca Pinel, defending, said Kaminski had little money and was not in the position to pay a fine.

The Magistrate’s Court placed the 61-year-old on remand until the time of his return sailing – for which he already had a booking.

He was also bound over to leave the Island for three years.
