FOUR alleged drug smugglers have appeared in court in connection with a haul worth about £500,000.

Class A drugs cocaine, MDMA powder and ecstasy tablets were seized following a joint States police and Customs and Immigration operation on Friday. Quantities of the class B drug cannabis were also recovered. All the drugs found, as well as a rucksack containing cash, on board a 37ft yacht near St Catherine's Breakwater.

Four men were arrested and on Monday appeared in the Magistrate's Court. Daniel Niall Riley (25), who was born in Liverpool but lived at Bonne Nuit and Paul Dennis Brown (57), Nicholas Thurban (60) and Colin Russel Sait (44), all from London, were remanded in custody.

The case is now due to be formally committed to Jersey's Royal Court, which deals with more serious matters, on 5 August.

During the brief hearing on Monday, the court was told that officers recovered about 5kg of cannabis, 2kg of MDMA powder, 1kg of cocaine and 2.2kg of ecstasy tablets.
