Paedophile hunter disappointed that petition has stalled

Earlier this year Cheyenne O’Connor launched a petition calling for people convicted of sex offences to be jailed for a minimum of three years and be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life.

In the first three days after the petition was launched it generated 1,000 signatures. However, it has since stagnated and is sitting on 3,968 signatures – more than 1,000 away from the number needed for it to be debated in the States.

The petition has three more weeks left to run and the campaigner wants Islanders to think again and take two minutes out of their day to sign it.

She said: ‘With less than three weeks to go until the petition is closed I’m disappointed, to say the least, in the residents of Jersey.

‘We require 5,000 signatures to have this topic debated, that’s not many in this Island.

‘If you want to see paedophiles serve longer sentences and spend life on the Sex Offenders Register, then please sign. It literally takes two minutes of your day and the confirmation email if not in your inbox will be in junk or spam folder. Thank you.’

Miss O’Connor’s work in snaring paedophiles online has led to convictions in Jersey, Guernsey and the UK.

In her original petition, she wanted tougher sentences imposed to deter future offenders. She stated: ‘The people of Jersey are sick and tired of seeing paedophiles found guilty of abusing, or attempting to abuse, our children being handed lenient prison sentences (if any prison sentence) by the Jersey courts.

‘This is the only way we can deter paedophiles from harming our children and partaking in the vile downloading of indecent images and videos of children online.’
