Jerseyman’s pictures of the Royals go global

Matt Porteous’s pictures of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children featured on the front page of many national newspapers as the family relaxed in the Duchess’s Chelsea Flower Show garden.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s garden, which she co-created with landscape architects Andree Davies, Adam White and the Royal Horticultural Society, is designed to highlight the benefits of nature in improving mental and physical well-being.

Mr Porteous, of Jersey-based Studio M, pictured Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis playing in the garden in a series of images released by Kensington Palace.

He said: ‘Mental health is something that is quite close to my heart, and that is part of the garden.

‘We are working with charities using our content to create a positive connection with people.

‘I think the Duchess quite likes the fact that I dedicate a lot of my work to that as well. It is something we are both passionate about.’

It is not the first time Mr Porteous has captured the family. He has also taken official photographs of Prince George for his third and fifth birthdays and Prince Louis’s christening, as well as shooting the family at Amner Hall – their country house in Norfolk – which featured on the Royal Highnesses’ 2018 Christmas card.

He added: ‘I’m happy to be invited back again. It is a huge honour to be invited and have the trust of the family.

‘I have worked with them quite a few times now and each time it is an amazing experience.

‘Everyone seems happy with the [latest] pictures. There is always an amazing response. People like to see a really normal family and I try to capture who they really are. It is nice to see the human side of the Royal Family.’

And Mr Porteous revealed that he has a number of other projects lined up – including some in Jersey.

‘We [Studio M] have an exhibition on 12 June. I worked in India alongside a company getting children out of child labour and poverty. We are exhibiting that on World Child Labour day.

‘I am also working on other projects in Jersey. It is really important for me to come home. Jersey is where I grew up and still chose to live. There is a certain sense of community here which is hard to find anywhere else in the world.

‘My work takes me around the world now and I capture what I can but Jersey has that special connection for me and that is why I continue to come back.’
