Firefighters tackle major blaze at St Helier pizzeria

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a major blaze at a pizza restaurant in St Helier on Monday.

Teams responded to the incident at the Pizzeria Romana restaurant on York Street, near the Town Hall, at around 2.17pm.

At least five fire engines and an aerial appliance tackled the blaze for more than two hours. Eye-witness footage showed flames and black smoke billowing from the roof of the popular restaurant. Smoke was seen across the Island.

In a statement posted on social media at around 4pm, the Fire and Rescue Service said: 'Operations in York Street starting to scale down now though disruption may continue for a while. Units being moved back to base so their kit and critical supplies can be cleaned, checked and replenished. Investigations into cause underway.
