Lifeboat association veteran celebrates her 100th birthday

Lorraine Hibbs, who is now a member of the independent Jersey Lifeboat Association, was presented with a card from the Queen by the Lieutenant-Governor Air Chief Marshal, Sir Stephen Dalton.

The former seamstress, who has lived in Jersey for her entire life, celebrated her landmark birthday at Glanville Care Home with her friends and family.

Sir Stephen, who was joined by Lady Dalton, congratulated Mrs Hibbs on reaching such a great age and commented on how special it is to be able to spend the day with her loved ones.

Mrs Hibbs, who was raised on a farm, went on to become an avid baker and churchgoer. According to her family, she was fluent in Jèrriais for most of her life and occasionally still has conversations in the language.

She joked about how she had reached such a good age: ‘Eat everything that is bad for you. Eat it all and tell them you enjoyed it.’

Mrs Hibbs added that she had lived in quite a few parishes in Jersey throughout her life, including St Mary, before she and her late husband, William ‘Bill’ Hibbs, decided to settle down in St Ouen.

Her grandson Andy Hibbs said she had been heavily involved in the RNLI Jersey Lifeboat Guild – a branch of the fund-raising section of the charity – throughout her life. Mrs Hibbs went on to join the JLA after it was set by her grandson and a group of former crew members following their split from the RNLI.

Mrs Hibbs who has three children, seven grandchildren and ten grandchildren, added that it was ‘really lovely’ to have been presented with card from the Queen, while surrounded by her family and friends.
