Could you take on Noddy, Pablo or even a terrapin?

Could you take on Noddy, Pablo or even a terrapin?

The charity has a group of various animals which have been at the Animals’ Shelter since last year.

Two dogs, Noddy and Pablo, have been in residence since June and November respectively.

According to the JSPCA, both are at high risk of becoming very depressed if they stay much longer.

Among the other animals are three ferrets which the JSPCA have been trying rehome for a year and ten terrapins, which have been there since last summer. And a cockatoo called Heston is now going to have to be rehomed in the UK after a 12-month search to find her a new home locally.

Barbara Keywood, from the JSPCA, said: ‘It is important to highlight to the public that we are struggling to find homes for local animals. It is very stressful being in a kennel or shelter environment for a long period of time. We see some of their characters change and some can become quite depressed.

‘Overall, we have a good turnaround with rehoming animals. Whenever we get a cat in we can often rehome it within a matter of hours, but some animals who come to us have been through a hard time and could have behavioural problems.

‘We would welcome anyone to come in and see the animals, but it is vital to remind people to do your research before considering taking an animal. It’s a huge commitment and it’s vital for people to make sure it is the right time for them.’

The appeal comes after a number of urgent calls for donations from Islanders to save the shelter from closing down. Local businesses including Voisins and the Channel Islands Co-op are supporting the shelter by donating money to the ‘Save the Shelter’ campaign. Additionally, the Provincial Grand Lodge of Jersey has donated £10,000 to the JSPCA.

Kenneth Michael Rondel, the provincial grand master of Jersey, said: ‘The funds are to be ring-fenced and used specifically to help those in our community who are unable to afford veterinary care for their pets.

‘It will be an important initiative and part of the Masonic community welfare we are actively promoting.’
