Warning after man seen trying to lure drunk woman into taxi

A warning from an Islander posted on social media has been shared more than 400 times.

In it he claims that he saw a very drunk woman in her 20s being approached by a man in his 40s who, it is claimed, tried to usher her into a taxi.

The States police have confirmed that officers responded to a non-emergency call at the weekend outside Liberation Station bus terminal but no suspects were identified.

Writing on Facebook, the witness who saw the drunk woman said she was ‘too drunk to even remember which friends she had been out with’.

He added: ‘About ten minutes later a man, I would guess in his early 40s, walked slowly past looking at her. [He] took a couple of pictures of this girl hunched over on the bench.’

The witness said in his post that the unknown man walked off but returned five minutes later.

‘I hear him say “c’mon love we’ll get a taxi an go somewhere”. Straight away I thought something is not right,’ said the man on Facebook. He claims he approached the stranger, who became ‘aggressive’.

The police were called but, according to the post and the force, the man in his 40s had left the scene.

A States police spokeswoman said it was important that people on a night out planned their journey home.

She said: ‘Don’t drink so much that you end up ruining your night. Stick with your friends, make sure you don’t leave anyone behind and plan your journey home.

‘Make sure you have a way of getting home and enough funds should you need a taxi. Jersey is a very safe place but we should never be complacent.’
