Murder trial: ‘Potential evidence lost after car flooded by incoming tide’

Jamie Lee warn is accused of murdering Zsuzsanna Besenyei (37) and hiding her body in her car boot before dumping her remains at Le Pulec Bay.

The 55-year-old then allegedly drove the car to the beach at St Aubin to make it appear as though Miss Besenyei had taken her own life.

Mr Warn denies murder and two counts of perverting the course of justice.

Crime scene investigator Graham Dryland told the court that when the car – a blue Ford Fiesta – was examined it was ‘heavily saturated’ with water.

Earlier the Royal Court jury had seen body-worn camera footage of the car being examined at the scene by PC Allen Le Bas, whose statement was also read to the court by Crown Advocate Matthew Maletroit, who is assisting in the prosecution with Crown Advocate Simon Thomas.

The car was found on the beach facing St Aubin’s Fort. The front windows were down the rear windows were rolled half-way down. A sun-roof window had become dislodged and was found on the beach behind the car.

A pair of secateurs were found in the driver’s side footwell. A spare car key was also found inside.

Mr Dryland said potential evidence from inside the car was degraded as a result of it having been submerged in the sea water but traces of DNA were found.

Miss Besenyei’s DNA was found on the steering column and hers and Mr Warn’s DNA was found on the secateurs.

The Crown contends that Mr Warn killed Miss Besenyei on 10 May and then tried to cover-up the murder.

The trial continues.
