Couple tried to reach Jersey using stolen identity cards

According to French media, on 23 July 2018, the individuals, who have not been named and are aged 19 and 29, attempted to board a ferry in Granville which was bound for Jersey. However, they were stopped after the Italian identity documents they were using were found to be false and stolen.

The couple recently appeared in the Coutances Criminal Court in Normandy and said that they had paid 3,200 euros for the documents. They said the cards were fake, but they were not aware they were stolen.

The court sentenced the couple to a two-month suspended prison sentence and ordered the confiscation of the stolen documents.

A spokesman for Customs said the agency would not comment on criminal cases in other jurisdictions but confirmed that no one else had tried to enter the Island illegally so far this year.
