However, on arrival, officers soon discovered that the vehicle was, in fact, a black Piaggio scooter, which was stolen on 9 February from a property in St Saviour.
At 12.30pm all services, along with the St Helier all-weather lifeboat – which had already left its base – and the St Catherine inshore lifeboat were stood down.
A spokesman for the States police said that plans were now being drawn up to recover the scooter.
