Charged and ready: Police go green with electric cars

The BMW i3 Rexs, which are capable of accelerating to 60mph in under eight seconds, were trialled by officers last year and were found to be far more efficient than their existing vehicles.

Unlike most electric cars, the new additions are also equipped with a small petrol generator which, if needed, can be used to recharge the batteries.

Acting deputy police chief James Wileman said that he was confident the vehicles would work well in Jersey.

‘Our focus is on keeping Jersey safe and these vehicles allow us to do that in a more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly way,’ he said. ‘The 2018-2019 Policing Plan sets out a clear intention to focus on greater corporate social responsibility in the way we run the police, and initiatives such as this help us do just that.

‘It is our intention to introduce more electric vehicles into the police fleet in Jersey as and when the older petrol and diesel vehicles are retired from service, assuming capability and cost criteria are met.’
