Ban and a £2,200 fine for driver who wrote off his car

The Magistrate’s Court heard that both offside tyres blew out as Josh Douglas Fahy (24), of Longueville Road, St Saviour, tried to take a bend beside Maritime House.

Centenier David Webber said that about 12.35am on 18 September Fahy was driving a black Peugeot behind another car driven by one of his friends.

The Centenier said that CCTV footage showed that he drove at speed and then overtook, driving on the wrong side of the road, but managed to get back on the correct side of the road.

However, as he tried to take the bend at the Maritime House end of the Albert Pier the car made contact with the pavement and both tyres burst.

The vehicle then struck a wall and the damage was so bad that the car was written off.

The court heard that the defendant denied he was trying to race the other car but agreed that other drivers would consider his actions to be dangerous.

Advocate Luke Sette, defending, said that his client accepted carrying out a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre and regretted his actions.

The court heard that Fahy was 23 at the time of the offence and was repaying £18,000 toward the cost of the vehicle that was written off during the crash.

In sentencing, Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said: ‘This is the sort of driving that young people get criticised for. It was a dangerous manoeuvre in a confined space.’
