Work on new hospital plan is halted

In an email to all States Members, Chief Minister John Le Fondré has confirmed the work on the new hospital is to be halted with the ongoing saga being put at the top of the agenda for the next Council of Ministers meeting. The ministerial team is due to meet on Wednesday.

As of the end of last year, more than £38 million had been spent on the project. Earlier this week, Environment Minister John Young rejected the planning application for the project – the second time such an application has been thrown out.

Senator Le Fondré has said it is important to consider Deputy Young’s decision as well as the recommendations made by independent planning inspector Philip Staddon, who reviewed the latest application.

The Council of Ministers is now facing calls to abort the plan to build a new hospital on the existing site.

Deputy Russell Labey has lodged a proposition asking Members to rescind the approved site. The proposition is due to be debated on Tuesday 12 February.
