The politician’s comments come after Charlotte Valeur, chairwoman of the national Institute of Directors, told The Mail on Sunday that her two mixed-race boys were called ‘n*****s’ eight years ago when they were aged nine and 11 and attending separate Jersey schools.
Senator Moore previously served as Home Affairs Minister and, during her tenure, instructed law officers to begin drafting new hate crime laws.
However, despite the telecommunications law being changed to include aspects of hate crime, no such legislation has yet been introduced.
‘It is troubling that children are growing up in an environment where intolerance is not disciplined. Respect for others is fundamental in any community,’ Senator Moore said.
‘It is a sad state of affairs when it is necessary to legislate for those who do not treat others appropriately. There is a need to introduce hate crime legislation and I hope that the new Minister for Home Affairs will continue the work that has begun in this regard.’
The Senator also called on Islanders to embrace diversity within Jersey.
‘Over the years Charlotte Valeur has successfully expressed the importance of diversity within our business community,’ she
said.
‘Every Islander can contribute to supporting our economy by embracing diversity and sharing the warmth that exists amongst us with everyone who lives here or visits the Island.’
