New hospital site report is with minister

No deadlines have been set for a final decision on the plans – the second to be submitted on the project.

Environment Minister John Young will make a decision on the planning application after analysing the report, compiled by UK independent planning inspector, Philip Staddon.

Mr Staddon’s report will not be made public until Deputy Young has made a ruling on the outcome of the planning application.

The £466-million project has caused significant controversy, with a number of Islanders condemning the Health Department and the Future Hospital team for pressing ahead with plans to rebuild on the existing hospital site.

Earlier this year, the initial planning application was rejected by then-Environment Minister Steve Luce, following recommendations by Mr Staddon following his review of the original plans.

Mr Staddon was invited back to carry out a review into the revised planning application, and held a string of public hearings in September.

The Future Hospital team believe that issues surrounding the original planning application have now been addressed and that the project should be given the green light for building work to begin.

However, in a further setback to the project, a States policy development board, chaired by Assistant Chief Minister Chris Taylor, recommended that two of the rejected sites – the Waterfront and Overdale – should be put back on the table for consideration as potential options for the Future Hospital Project.

The majority of the panel concluded that they were ‘not assured’ that the evidence supported the current plan of building the new hospital on the existing site, the cost of which has been estimated at £466 million.
