2018 charity auction raises over £70,000

Bidders were calling volunteers manning the phones on Sunday, adding their offers for a host of lots to those made online during the previous week at jerseychristmasappeal.je.

The auction raised £50,213, while the Pledge Your Wedge initiative, through which people are asked to give a donation, raised £10,080.

For every £10 ‘wedge’ callers pledge online, they get one chance to win a prize. The more money pledged, the better the prize gets.

In addition to the cash raised through Pledge Your Wedge, Islanders Daniel and Latoya Layton promised to donate £10,000 if the auction raised more than £50,000.

‘The total for the day was an amazing £70,293,’ said Fiona Walker, who was co-presenting the radio auction for the fifth year.

‘A big thank-you to everyone who bid and a special thanks to everyone who provided auction lots. Every penny raised will go to help make Christmas a little easier for disadvantaged families and individuals in Jersey.’

She added: ‘Credit to the teams from Rotary, WebReality and 103, and Annette Blanchet, Murray Norton and Peter Mac for making everything run smoothly, and also an anonymous supporter who works tirelessly and generously for the appeal.’

One of this year’s star lots was a VIP visit to the home of the Red Arrows which went for £1,725.
