JSPCA chief asks Islanders for help

In a letter which has been delivered to Islanders, titled SOS – Save Our Shelter, Kevin Keen lists a number of different ways in which people can help to raise funds for the shelter, which he described as facing ‘real challenges’.

The voluntary chief executive added that if every pet-owning household donated £5 per month it would raise over £1 million per year. Suggestions on ways in which Islanders can fundraise included office workers organising either dress-down or ‘dress as your favourite animal’ day at work, to join as a member, register with the shelter to re-home an animal, or use the shelters’ Co-op share number, 315618, when shopping.

Last year the shelter, which was founded in Jersey in 1868, rehomed 36 dogs, 160 cats, received 16,790 phone calls, their vets carried out 5,848 consultations and 921 operations.

Mr Keen added that last year the shelter, which costs £37,000 per week to run, carried out 794 veterinary procedures and attended 3,307 Animal Ambulance callouts.

Mr Keen was appointed to help the charity get out of serious financial difficulty and previously told the JEP that he has a matter of months to save the shelter from closure. He was appointed to the role for six months and has offered his services on a voluntary basis.
