Kenneth Charles Pinglaux (59), of St Saviour, denies one count of rape.
The jurors heard that the woman had been on a ‘rare girl’s night out’ during the evening before the alleged attack.
Crown Advocate Emma Hollywood, prosecuting, said Mr Pinglaux had behaved in an ‘underhanded’ way, taking advantage of the alleged victim.
She suggested he might have believed that the woman would be ‘too embarrassed’ to report what had happened.
And she asked the jurors to leave at the courtroom door any preconceived notions of what a rapist or rape victim might look like.
‘There is no special look to a rapist and equally there is no special look to a rape victim,’ Advocate Hollywood said.
Yesterday the alleged victim told the court she was ‘shocked’ and ‘stressed’ after the alleged incident.
She said she went out perhaps once a year, and drank alcohol very infrequently.
But the night before the alleged rape she went on ‘a girl’s night’ to celebrate a birthday.
The court heard that at the end of the evening she went to sleep fully clothed, but claims that when she woke up the next morning, someone had undressed her and she was in pain.
She told the court she was ‘shocked’ and had a panic attack and later confronted the defendant.
The alleged rape was reported that same day and the woman underwent a forensic examination.
The trial, before a jury of seven men and five women, is expected to last four days.
