Garage worker ‘will lose his job’ after speeding at almost 70 mph

David Vieira Rodrigues, of Grands Vaux, St Saviour, was caught by honorary police officers as he sped along Route Orange in St Brelade at about
9 pm on 14 August.

Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu told the defendant that he had driven at ‘a highly dangerous speed’. He banned the 23-year-old from driving for six months and fined him £600.

Advocate James Bell, defending, said that the road was well lit and the traffic was light at the time of the offence. He added: ‘It is relevant that the honorary police officer described that Rodrigues was immediately apologetic and was co-operative throughout the whole process.’

He urged the court not to impose a ban, as the defendant was ‘guaranteed’ to lose his job, as he picked up and delivered cars to and from customers. He also urged the court not to force the defendant to have to retake his driving test at the end of any ban put in place.

In sentencing, Mr Le Cornu said: ‘This was a case of a highly dangerous speed. You were travelling at more than twice the speed limit and you must realise that limits are in place for road safety reasons.’

However, Mr Le Cornu said that he would not impose a mandatory driving test retake at the end of the disqualification.
