Extra police officers deployed in St Helier after women are followed by stranger

The first woman fought off her attacker after he grabbed her around the neck and tried to drag her into a car park in the Springfield area in the early hours of 9 September.

In the second incident – at about 2.30 am on 23 September – a woman was followed through the streets from the town centre to St Saviour’s Road before she managed to get inside her home.

Last week the States police released CCTV footage of a man they want to speak to in relation to the first attack and urged women not to walk home alone.

Det Chief Insp Chris Beechey said there were similarities in the descriptions of the suspects in both cases and detectives were ‘keeping an open mind’ over whether the incidents were linked.

The force has now said that extra officers have been deployed in the north of town area at weekends in recent weeks, and would continue to be for the foreseeable future. They said they had received a ‘limited’ response to the CCTV footage appeal.

Anyone with information is being asked to phone the States police on 612612 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
