Hospital plan public inquiry starts

UK independent planning inspector Philip Staddon is heading the inquiry into building the new £466 million facility on the current site as well as plans to develop facilities at Westaway Court, which is based on the opposite side of Parade Gardens.

Mr Staddon – who recommended that the initial proposal to build on the current site be rejected following a public inquiry last November – will assess whether the application complies with planning policy and whether the proposal fits the Island Plan.

As part of his remit he will look at the scale of the hospital, how the proposed buildings will impact on their surroundings and the impact of demolition and construction.

Other sites where the new hospital could potentially be built will also be considered as part of the inquiry, which is scheduled to run until Friday 21 September.

The inquiry, which is being held at St Paul’s Centre, will also take into account the views of Islanders, businesses, and organisations submitted earlier this year at the invitation of Mr Staddon.

An open evening is also due to be held tomorrow between 6.30 pm and 7.30 pm at St Paul’s Centre.
