Brothers stride out to support cancer charities

Jack, Joshua and James Rondel will be walking in aid of Friends of Jersey Oncology and Cancer Research UK and it was Jack, a student at De La Salle College, who organised the event. ‘We are doing the walk for our father who’s been fighting stage 4 bowel cancer for the past three and a half years. We are also doing it for the charities and raising as much as possible for them, and lastly, for all the other families and patients who are affected daily by this awful disease,’ said Jack.

‘At this point in time, Dad is still fighting the disease but the numbers of treatments he can have are decreasing rapidly. He has dealt with it all with a positive mind-set which he says is “half the battle”. You have to be positive and have good support from friends, family, and of course the doctors and nurses who have been amazing throughout the tough journey. I’m very proud of Dad, he’s been so strong. Not many people could have gone through what he did and is. He never gives up.’

The 36-mile coastal route is the same as the annual De La Salle walk, which Jack (15) has completed for the past three years and he will be joined by Josh (21) who is studying at Sussex University and James (24) who works at HSBC.

‘We are fit and raring to go,’ said Jack. ‘We exercise during the week anyway, through walking, boxing and swimming, so we didn’t need any specific training beforehand. The response to the event is truly remarkable, not only from people and donors, but businesses too. We are truly humbled by all the support and positivity for our upcoming walk.

‘We will have support from family and friends along the way, including Dad, who intends to walk across the finishing line with us. We are very much looking forward to the walk, and of course completing it!’

People can donate via the Justgiving website or Facebook and the walk will start from La Frégate café at 9 am this morning and finishes outside the Royal Yacht around 4 pm to 5 pm.
