Watchdog to oversee new hospital project

The Chairman’s Committee, a body that oversees the work of Scrutiny, has re-established the Future Hospital Review Panel which was set up during the last Assembly.

The panel will review the process of building the new £466 million facility as well as scrutinise the costs involved and where the new hospital should be located.

Deputy Kevin Pamplin, chairman of the panel, said the new hospital would be the largest capital project ever undertaken in Jersey and it was the panel’s job to hold ministers to account and to keep the public informed.

The re-constitution of the panel comes after a Hospital Policy Development Board was set up by Chief Minister John Le Fondré to review the evidence that supported the previous States Assembly’s decision to build the new hospital. That panel is due to report back by 31 October.

Constable Chris Taylor, chairman of the Hospital Policy Development Board, has been invited to give evidence to the Future Hospital Review Panel about the latest developments in the project.

And Senator Le Fondré, who sat on the Future Hospital Review Panel in the last Assembly, has also been called upon to give evidence at a public hearing.

Meanwhile, a planning inquiry held by UK independent planning inspector Philip Staddon is due to get underway on Monday17SEPT.

Deputy Pamplin said: ‘Our job in Scrutiny is to hold ministers to account for their policies and to help keep the public informed on matters of public interest.

‘The future hospital will be the Island’s largest project to date and it is important that the public are clear about the status of the project. The Chief Minister is ultimately responsible for this project so we want to get an update from him on his government’s progress to deliver this essential piece of infrastructure for the Island.’

Deputy Mary Le Hegarat and Constable John Le Maistre will also sit on the panel.
