Huge sunflower sets new record at F J Ahier Country Gardens contest

The giant bloom was grown by Tony Maia, who also had the tallest plant at nine feet, just a few inches taller than the specimen entered by second-placed Martin Preisig.

The plants were measured by John Hidrio and Pam Laurens, who also judged the array of produce from the plots.

The most successful exhibitor was Kevin Roberts, who secured several gold certificates plus the award for best entry with his beetroots.

Results: Tallest Sunflower: 1, Tony Maia (9 ft); 2, Martin Preisig (8 ft 7¼ in); 3, Jean De Gruchy (7 ft 5 in); 4, Martin Rouault (4 ft 10 in) and 5, Martin Rouault (4 ft 9 in).

Widest Sunflower: 1, Tony Maia (17½ in); 2, Kevin Roberts (12¾ in); 3, Jean De Gruchy (11½ in); 4, Martin Rouault (10½ in) and 5, Martin Rouault (8 in).
