Prison warning for two men involved in drunken assault

Zack Boakye-Yiadom (22), of Common Lane, and Connor Ian James Maher (22), of Clos de Balmain, pleaded guilty to attacking the man at the Weighbridge in the early hours of 7 July.

Police legal adviser Advocate Chris Baglin told the court that there was CCTV footage of the incident and submitted that the case fell within the jurisdiction of the lower court.

He said that when the victim was on the ground and trying to get up ‘there was a kick to his side’ but no suggestion of any kicks to his head.

Having viewed the footage, Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu said: ‘This was quite an unpleasant assault but because of the age of the defendants I am prepared to accept jurisdiction.

‘I will say it is on the cusp of this court’s jurisdiction and that there is always a possibility that a custodial sentence will be imposed for drunken violence.’

Both defendants were released on bail and told that a social inquiry report would be prepared on each of them in time for their sentencing hearing on 3 October.

Maher was given consent to leave the Island while on bail to accompany a grandparent to a medical appointment in the UK.
