Guernsey skeletal remains discovery: Information heard during court case

A friend of the Ukranian national, Neil McDonald (39), was sentenced to 18 months in prison by Guernsey’s Royal Court last week after being found in possession of drugs and guns – including a sawn-off shotgun and another shotgun, which were collected from one of Mr Alps’ properties days after his disappearance.

Mr Alps is understood to have supplied paramilitary forces in Ukraine with firearms and vehicles during their anti-Russian campaign.

And according to McDonald, Mr Alps thought that he was being followed in the days leading up to his disappearance and needed to ‘spend some time away’.

Speaking in Guernsey’s Royal Court, Advocate Rory Calderwood, prosecuting, said that after initially saying that he had not heard from Mr Alps, McDonald admitted that he had received a call at 2.30 am from Mr Alps, who had told him to go to his lock-up at Pleinmont, in the south west of the island, and collect two bags.

Following this admission, McDonald led officers to the bags, which were in the back of a car, and told them that he had agreed to pick them up as he was ‘helping a mate out’ and that Mr Alps had told him they were ‘clean’.

However, when officers looked in the bags, they found a sawn-off shotgun, a shotgun and ammunition.

After a search was conducted of McDonald’s property, they also found LSD tablets and 17.39 kg of cannabis resin.

In an interview, McDonald told officers he knew Mr Alps had been involved in some ‘dark things’ and with the Ukranian military. He also said that Mr Alps had given him £500 in cash.
