Pride of Jersey votes reach record level

A total of 27,700 votes had been recorded by the time the polls closed at midnight on Sunday, beating last year’s final voting figure by around 7,000.

JEP managing director Paul Carter said: ‘The reaction from the voting public has been unbelievable. It’s staggering to see the volume of votes exceed 27,000 and I do not envy the judging panel’s job of picking out the final winners ahead of the ceremony at Government House next month.

‘This has set a really high bar for 2019, which will be the fifth year of this people’s choice award. Now we really are going to have to work hard to find a way to mark this anniversary after such a rousing result this year.

‘I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the nominees and voters for supporting the Pride of Jersey awards with such enthusiasm, it really is a privilege for all of the sponsors and the JEP to be part of such a community-driven success story.’

The categories include neighbour, young achiever, grandparent, child, ambassador, environmentalist, teacher, volunteer fundraiser and inspirational leader of the year. The three nominees who receive the most votes in each category will be published in the JEP and placed on a shortlist from which a panel of judges will choose a winner.

Since the Pride of Jersey awards were launched four years ago, the judging panels have comprised a representative of the award sponsor, the previous year’s winner and a JEP employee.

The judging is due to be held next month, with all three finalists for each category being invited to Government House for the awards ceremony on Saturday 22 September. Each category winner will receive a prize worth £1,000 from their sponsor.
