Fifty years and counting for Bill and family at the Biarritz Hotel

But not the Platts family from Yorkshire, who think Jersey has all the variety needed for a good holiday.

This month the family returned to the Island for a stay at the Biarritz Hotel in St Brelade – for an impressive 50th consecutive year. And, it was their 51st trip to Jersey overall.

Bill Platts and his daughter Ruth Rabon have been spending their summer holidays at the hotel since July 1968, when Ruth was only a year old.

He said they had chosen to keep returning to the Biarritz because ‘we like it so much, it fits our lifestyle’.

And he added: ‘The Island speaks to us in a lot of ways – it’s the variety it has.’

Mr Platts (83), a former civil engineer from Barnsley, said he had seen a lot of changes to the Island’s infrastructure over the years, especially at the Waterfront.

His family has also grown since his first visit in 1967, and last week Mr Platts was in Jersey with his second wife Beryl, Ruth and her husband Shawn, their three children and one of their friends. All of Mrs Rabon’s children have been coming with them to Jersey since they were born and, the family say, ‘it’s become part of their life’.

As well as enjoying walks along the promenade and visits to the Fishermen’s Chapel, the family also come to visit the friends that they’ve made in Jersey after holidaying here for so long.

And even after five decades, Mr Platts says he still finds new things to do in the Island: ‘Over 50 years I’ve always found a little place to visit that I’ve never been before, and that’s one of the things I love about the Island,’ he said.
