Smiles in the surf with Healing Waves charity

Healing Waves was set up around a year ago so that individuals, whatever their condition or disability, could access the ocean and its therapeutic benefits in a safe way.

The aim has been to better the lives of others and provide new meaningful experiences that might not otherwise be available. All ages have been welcomed and to date no application has been turned down. Sessions are held throughout the summer months at Le Braye and in St Brelade’s Bay.

Tim is the first to be accepted with motor neurone disease, thanks to the provision of the special surf board sponsored by Enable Jersey and a beach-adapted wheelchair.

One of Tim’s carers, Sophie Kilpatrick. is a Healing Waves volunteer, and thought it would be the perfect experience for Tim. He certainly agreed, thoroughly enjoying the liberating sensation of the warm sunshine, the spray in his face and the wind in his hair. So much so, that he can’t wait to have another go.

Communicating with the help of his tablet, he praised the charity and typed, ‘I am very grateful that these people have given up their time to give me a bit of happiness.’

He was also grateful for the support from his family and friends on the beach, including his carers and representatives of the Jersey branch of the Motor Neurone Association.
