Driver was like someone from ‘the Fast and the Furious’ films

In the minutes before the car driven by Darren John Gray crashed, a number of witnesses called the police and described his driving as ‘erratic’, ‘dangerous’ and ‘irresponsible’.

In sentencing the drink-driver, Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said: ‘It was a miracle that no injury occurred to third parties. It is difficult to describe how bad the driving was.’

Outlining the offences, police legal adviser Howard Tobias said that the car drove on the pavement, was on the wrong side of the road and also drove across the central reservation on roads in the First Tower area on the night of Wednesday 23
May.

A number of witnesses contacted the States police at about 9.30 pm to report the bad driving, with one saying it was like something out of the Fast and the Furious film franchise.

The incident ended when the car crashed into a wall outside a house on West Hill, leaving the passenger with a fractured collar bone.

Mr Tobias said that Gray, of Valley Road, got out of the car and left his passenger. However, he was arrested nearby shortly afterwards as he made his way back towards the crash scene.

The court also heard that Gray then resisted arrest and was ‘aggressive’ with police officers, and kicked and head-butted the inside of the police van.

A blood sample given by the defendant showed that his level of alcohol was 199 mg in 100 ml of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg.

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of causing serious injury by careless driving, drink-driving and resisting arrest.

Advocate Rebecca Morley-Kirk, defending, said that Gray fully accepted ‘that this was an appalling piece of driving’. She said that due to drinking, his recollection of events had ‘completely disappeared’. ‘He has genuine remorse for what he did and it is indeed fortunate that no one else was seriously injured,’ she said.

Gray was also banned from driving for three years.
