A-levels: JCG has its best ever results

Jersey College for Girls – one of the first schools to release its figures – said it had achieved its best results on record.

For some their grades will mean they have secured a place at their first-choice university or jobs with local businesses.

Others who did not get the results that they had hoped for will be desperately trying to find places at universities through the UCAS clearing system or will be making alternative arrangements.

Carl Howarth, JCG principal, said his school had achieved the highest A-level exam results in the college’s history and that he was proud of both his students and staff.

‘When you study tremendously hard, show great resilience and have incredible teachers, as our students have done, you thoroughly deserve this exceptional level of success,’ he said.

‘Over 50 per cent of our grades are at the very top band of A* or A with 95 per cent of all grades at A* to C. We are also delighted that the strategies our students and staff have been pursuing has increased our A* and A grades by 18 per cent over the past three years.’

Mr Howarth added that the results would allow many of the school’s students to attend some of the UK’s leading universities and join some of the Island’s most successful businesses.

‘We wish them every success and happiness as they venture on to universities ranging from Oxford, Durham, Exeter, local and international institutions, to name just a few,’ he said.

‘We also congratulate our students choosing to stay in the Island to work and who have all secured positions in a range of local businesses.’

Meanwhile, Victoria College revealed that its students had performed well with the majority of them securing a place at their first-choice university.

In a statement, the school said that 15.4 per cent of exam passes were at the top grade of A* and 24 per cent were at A grade, representing one of the school’s strongest results in recent years.

‘These tremendous results are the culmination of a great deal of hard work and I am delighted for our boys,’ headmaster Alun Watkins said.

‘I would like to congratulate them and thank their parents and, of course, our dedicated teachers for their support and guidance over the past two years.’

Mr Watkins added that his school’s results matched those of 2017, when students achieved the best results for six years. A total of 86 per cent of exams taken in 2018 were marked grades A* to C and 40 per cent at A* or A.

He said: ‘I hope our students feel proud of what they have achieved. These A-levels will open doors to university or employment and enable them to build successful futures.’

And students from Beaulieu Convent School were celebrating today after its Year 13s collectively achieved a 100 per cent pass rate on all courses.

The school said almost 80 per cent of all A2 A-Level and BTEC examinations taken had been awarded grades from A* to C.

Beaulieu also said that its increased adoption of vocational courses had led to exceptional results – with students achieving 60 per cent of grades in them at A* and A.

Rory Steel, director of services at Beaulieu, said that he was thrilled his students had achieved such impressive results which enabled them to leave fully equipped for the future.

‘Our results this summer are excellent and build on the on-going academic success we have enjoyed in recent years,’ he said.

‘We are very proud of both the students and staff and their achievements are testament to the hard work of all our students and the inspiring teaching and dedication of our staff.’

At the time of going to print no other schools had released their results.
