Hospital ward is to be closed for two weeks

The Portelet Ward, which has a capacity of 28 beds, will be shut from today while new emergency lighting is installed and a bathroom and treatment room is refurbished.

It is expected that the work will be completed on Tuesday 28 August.

The work has been timed to coincide with scheduled annual maintenance of the main theatre complex, which will result in fewer operations and a reduced demand for beds.

During the closure of Portelet Ward, alternative measures have been put in place, including freeing up space within other wards.

Gary Kynman, deputy director of operations, said: ‘Every effort will be made to minimise disruption while this essential work is carried out, but we would like to apologise to anyone who’s inconvenienced while it is taking place. The end result will achieve significant improvements that will be of benefit to both patients and staff. All the patient area work will be completed in time for business as usual to resume on Tuesday 28 August following the bank holiday weekend.’

A letter has already been sent to patients and relatives explaining the reasons for the temporary closure, and providing contact details for those with any queries.
