But a child genius from the UK has recently put the famous Jersey Royal potato to a different use – to power a suite in the Island’s newest hotel.
Rahul Doshi (13), who won last year’s series of the Channel 4 show Child Genius, visited the new Premier Inn in St Helier to launch the Jersey Royal Suite by powering the electric appliances with the Island’s famous export.
North London-based Rahul used just one of the potatoes as a conductor to power a lamp, hairdryer, kettle and a large neon ‘Jersey Royal Suite’ sign.
The vegetable, which is essentially a mix of starch and salts, is considered an excellent conductor, creating what’s known as a ‘salt bridge’ between the currents.
Rahul said: ‘I love testing my skills – it’s the best way to learn. When this challenge came my way, I knew it was going to be so much fun.
‘Powering the Jersey Royal Suite at the new St Helier Premier Inn was tough to crack at times, but the end result was so rewarding and I’m so proud that I was able to make everything work.
‘I’d never been to Jersey before so not only did I get to have fun experimenting with science, technology and potatoes, but my family and I were also able to explore the beautiful island. I really enjoyed visiting and would like to go back again soon.’
The 91-bedroom hotel at Charing Cross was officially opened in May and has already welcomed hundreds of guests.
Vivieanne Carr, new openings manager at Premier Inn, said: ‘Rahul’s world first achievement to power the Jersey Royal Suite using Jersey Royal potatoes definitely makes this our most unique hotel opening to date.
‘With the combination of Rahul’s efforts and the winning Premier Inn formula the hotel is already off to a flying start, and our team are busy welcoming guests through the doors.’
