Warning after campfire causes countryside blaze

The fire, which broke out in a field off Trinity Hill on Saturday afternoon, destroyed an area of vegetation measuring 50 metres by 50 metres and left the nearby road closed for a short time.

At the height of the incident, ten firefighters, two fire engines and a water carrier were at the scene.

In a statement, watch commander Richard Ryan said: ‘With the prolonged hot, dry weather we are currently experiencing we would urge all members of the public to be particularly vigilant when lighting fires of any kind, disposing of used barbecues and discarding cigarette butts.’

However, it looks unlikely that anyone will be lighting a campfire this weekend – as Jersey is expected to be hit by a spell of wet and windy weather.

Temperatures were due to drop significantly, with much more unsettled conditions are forecast for the weekend and heavy rain and temperatures reaching just 20°C – about 9°C lower than the highs seen on Sunday and yesterday and 2°C below average for the time of year.

Forecaster Sharon Merren said: ‘The weather is on the change and low pressure is expected to be over Britain this weekend.’

The UK Met Office, which issues 30-day forecasts for the British Isles on its website, is forecasting a mix of sunny periods interspersed with wetter interludes, especially in the north-west of the UK.

It says the weather could become more settled at the end of the month and start of September, potentially becoming ‘very warm or hot, especially across southern parts’.
