Islanders on stamps to mark First World War centenary

The series of seven stamps feature original photographs sourced from the Société Jersiaise, the Jersey Museum and the Victoria College Book of Remembrance which have been restored and colourised by a specialist from Russia.

The set was unveiled at Jersey Post’s headquarters on Wednesday during a ceremony attended by family members of those who appear on the stamps.

Chris Elligott, philatelic artwork and production manager, said that colourising the images had been quite a long process and that it would be the first time that some Islanders had seen their relatives in colour.

‘We did not just want to commemorate those who had been decorated, but also those ordinary men and women with extraordinary back stories,’ he said.

‘We spent a lot of time researching the details, from the colours and materials of the uniforms and the badges right down to the subjects’ eye and hair colours which we found through historical references and with the help of family members.

‘This historical accuracy, together with Olga’s [the Russian colourist] incredible attention to detail has enabled us to bring a whole new dimension to the original photographs, building a bridge with the past and making the subjects appear more present, almost tangible.’
