Team takes on challenge of 30 bays in a single day

The annual event, which raises funds for Jersey Hospice and the National Trust for Jersey, sees Islanders swim a minimum of 30 strokes in 30 different bays across the Island during the month of July.

Adding their own twist to the challenge, Islanders David Bailey, Louise Bailey, Daniel d’Avoine and Rik De Louche decided they would try to take a dip in 30 of the designated bays, but in just 12 hours instead. And they travelled between the bays by bike.

The foursome set out at 8 am on Sunday hoping to complete the challenge within eight hours before putting their feet up to watch the World Cup final at 4 pm.

David and Louise Bailey dropped out after 20 bays and hope to complete the rest of the challenge at a later date.

But Mr d’Avoine and Mr De Louche made it all the way around in what proved to be a tougher challenge than they expected.

‘We set off at 8 am from Portelet on Sunday morning and were planning to get it completed in eight hours before the World Cup final,’ said Mr d’Avoine, a motion graphics artist from St Helier.

‘But it took longer than we expected, as it was quite technical to get into all the bays, especially if you are cycling.

‘Some of the hills were very difficult, as we were going down into each of the bays.

‘We went for a swim in each bay and did 30 strokes in each. By the time we got to L’Etacq the tide was out and it took us an hour to get into the sea.

‘At 1.30 pm we were at Rozel Bay and two of the guys had to go to other appointments.

‘We decided to continue and try to it get it done in 12 hours instead, because it would have been too much of a rush to do it in eight. We ended up finishing it at 7.50 pm on Sunday
night.’

He added: ‘We saw the 30 Bays in 30 Days challenge which is being done to raise money for the Jersey National Trust and Jersey Hospice and based our challenge on that.

‘If anyone wants to donate money we would like it to go to those two charities.’
