Ivy to be removed from Green Street gravestones

St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft has pledged to ensure that the gravestones covered in ivy in Green Street Cemetery will be cleared up following a complaint from a parishioner.

The weeds have now covered the headstones to such an extent that the writing on some of them has become illegible.

In a letter to the JEP published this week Eric Falla said: ‘The cemetery at Green Street needs urgent attention as ivy has overgrown on many of the graves. So much so that it is impossible to be able to read the name, yet we ratepayers have found the money to maintain and refurbish the grave of the departed Constable Pierre Le Sueur.’

In response, Mr Crowcroft said that the state of the gravestones was unacceptable and he had raised the issue with his municipal services team.

‘He is absolutely right to bring this to our attention and there is not any justification for allowing ivy to grow on gravestones,’ he said.

‘The bio-diversity of the cemetery is very important and we try to let the wild flowers grow and therefore do not cut the grass all the time but ivy on the gravestones is not acceptable.

‘Mr Falla had written to me about ten different issues and I have actioned them all with my team so they should be sorted out soon.’
