A fifth of glass goes in the bin

Deputy Kevin Lewis said in the States that his department received around 5,938 tonnes of glass for recycling each year, which he estimated to be around 79 per cent of all the Island’s waste glass.

He said: ‘Whilst this is good it is a concern that a fifth of the Island’s waste glass is being processed by the incinerator.’

Deputy Lewis said that more needed to be done to raise awareness of the need for Islanders to separate and recycle their glass waste, as burning it in the incinerator caused problems for the facility.

He added: ‘Recycling needs to be more available. This means every parish providing household recycling.’
