Christopher Henry Hall (42) called a man wearing a turban a ‘terrorist’ and ‘a member of Isis’ and asked a black man ‘Why the f**k are you here?’
He called a Canadian, who he thought was from the USA, an ‘American t**t’ and accused him of ‘blowing up s**t in your own country’. He also told a group of tourists in Kensington Place to go home.
During sentencing, Magistrate Bridget Shaw told Hall that his behaviour was ‘dreadful’ and she banned him from licensed premises for six months when he is released from prison.
Police legal adviser Susie Sharpe said that Hall admitted using words that were threatening or abusive.
Outlining the case, she said that on 13 June the police received two calls from people about a man being racially abusive in King Street.
The court heard that a witness watched Hall and was on the phone to police as she followed him along the main shopping precinct.
Miss Sharpe said that Hall shouted at a man wearing a turban ‘Have you got a bomb under that. You are part of Isis, 9/11, you are a terrorist.’ The prosecutor said that the witness was disgusted by the racist remarks and shocked by what had been said.
The following day a park keeper in Parade Gardens and two female witnesses reported that Hall had racially abused a man he thought was an American but was in fact Canadian.
Outlining a separate offence, Miss Sharpe said that at 9.45 am on 18 June Hall shouted abuse at a woman in Cheapside.
When questioned by police, Hall said that he was ‘frustrated at being unemployed when so many foreigners are getting jobs’.
Advocate Sarah Dale, defending, said that Hall had no real explanation for his actions.
‘He apologises to the court and to those people he offended and accepts that his actions may have been distressing and intimidating.
‘He feels that was not the real him,’ she said
