Air passenger numbers increase on most routes

According to Ports of Jersey, the Airport processed 734,159 passengers and experienced a one per cent increase on routes to all regions apart from north-west England and Guernsey, which remain unchanged compared to last year.

In March, easyJet launched a direct service to Edinburgh which has so far led to more than 22,000 people travelling to the destination and contributing to an overall 34 per cent passenger increase in the Airport’s Scottish market.

That market is up a total of 32,282 passengers until June, compared to the same time in 2017.

Meanwhile, the north-east market experienced a ten per cent increase with 30,583 people travelling so far this year.

And 7,546 people, representing an eleven per cent increase, travelled to Northern Ireland in the first six months of this year compared to the same time last year.

Myra Shacklady, who is in charge of developing new routes for Ports of Jersey, said: ‘As we approach peak summer season we are delighted with the progress our airline partners have made so far in terms of performance and increasing passenger numbers in 2018.

‘Given the series of routes planned for this summer, we remain confident that we will see this trend continue.’

EasyJet holds 36 per cent of Jersey’s air travel market share, British Airways 23 per cent and Flybe 22 per cent.
