Deputy Labey takes on Commonwealth post

The Grouville Deputy was elected to the role of chairwoman of Jersey’s Commonwealth Parliamentary Association this week.

She replaces St Clement Constable Len Norman, who stepped down earlier this month after chairing the branch for nine years.

Jersey has been a member of the association since 1961. Deputy Labey said: ‘Association membership gives us all wonderful opportunities to meet fellow parliamentarians from other jurisdictions, to attend conferences, discuss topics of mutual interest and benefit, to share ideas, but also to network globally throughout the Commonwealth – a relationship that I believe is going to become more important post-Brexit.’

Deputy Labey was elected during the association’s annual general meeting on Wednesday. Chief Minister John Le Fondré said earlier this month that he planned to create a new ministerial position to take responsibility for the Island’s international development work and he plans to nominate Deputy Labey for the role. She also chairs Jersey Overseas Aid. Committee members elected to the JCPA at the same time were: Senator Sarah Ferguson, Constables Simon Crowcroft and Karen Shenton-Stone and Deputies Jeremy Maçon, Louise Doublet, Kirsten Morel,
Mary Le Hegarat, Jess Perchard and Kevin Pamplin.
