Nominations for this year’s Pride of Jersey awards opens

For a fourth year, the newspaper is today launching its Pride of Jersey awards to recognise and honour people contributing to all aspects of community life in the Island and to celebrate those Islanders who go the extra mile.

Since the annual awards ceremony was launched in 2015 as part of the JEP’s 125th anniversary celebrations, more than 700 individuals or groups have been nominated in recognition of the work they do to make Jersey such a special place in which to live.

Following on from last year’s memorable and emotional event, this year’s awards are aiming to be the biggest and best celebration to date.

All individuals or groups nominated in each category will be featured in the JEP, to ensure that they each receive some recognition for the contributions they make. Once the nominations close, members of the public will then be invited to vote for their favourite in each of the 12 categories, with the top three in each going forward to the judging panels. Each award will then be judged by a panel made up of the previous year’s winner, a sponsor, and a senior representative from the JEP.

Last year more than 22,000 public votes were received, for more than 200 nominees, ensuring that Pride of Jersey remains an awards by the people for the people.

This year’s ceremony, sponsored by Dandara, will take place in September at a yet-to-be-revealed venue.

At the ceremony, each category winner will receive a prize worth £1,000 from their specially selected category sponsor.

Last year’s exclusive event took place in the luxurious grounds of St John’s Manor.

The year before, the winners joined now-retired Lieutenant-Governor General Sir John McColl and Lady McColl at a special Pride of Jersey lunch in their formal dining room, while in 2015 winners were treated like A-list celebrities and taken for a flight around the Channel Islands on a private jet before being driven home in limousines, following the first awards event at Aviation Beauport.

The details of this year’s ceremony are yet to be revealed, but JEP managing director Paul Carter said that it was shaping up to be another memorable event.

‘Our ethos has always been to steer away from the traditional black-tie-style award ceremonies and, instead, to put an event on that is more relaxed but also very special. We want to invite people to a location that they would not normally get the opportunity to see or experience and this year will be no different.’

Mr Carter added: ‘We once again encourage our readers to nominate some of the amazing people in Jersey who are doing extraordinary things every day. This is everyone’s chance to say a big thank you.’
