Interim director for Health is appointed

Anthony McKeever is set to take on the new job for six months after previously serving as an interim chief executive at four NHS trusts. He is due to begin working for the States on Monday.

The announcement comes after a number of States executives were told last month their jobs would soon no longer exist and that they would have to reapply for new positions as part of a restructuring programme.

Earlier this month, Julie Garbutt, chief executive of the Health Department, announced that she was to step down and would not apply for the new role.

In a statement, Charlie Parker, chief executive of the States, said that Mr McKeever’s appointment would allow the States to roll out its programme of employment changes without delay.

‘This is an important appointment as it provides continuity of leadership for the new Health and Community Services department, following Julie Garbutt’s retirement,’ he said.

‘Anthony McKeever has considerable senior strategic and operational experience in the NHS and his appointment ensures that we can make the structural and service changes that are needed without delay.’

Meanwhile, John Howard has joined the States on an initial six-month contract, taking on the role of head of health modernisation – a position which is focused on speeding up the process of reforming and restructuring the newly formed Health and Community Services Department.

Mr Howard has previously worked for KPMG and Ernst and Young and most recently served as the board adviser for Healthcare at Home – one of the UK’s largest home healthcare providers.

In his role, Mr Howard will help deliver a transformation programme including new IT systems to allow the department to reach cost-cutting targets.

Rob Sainsbury, group managing director for the Hospital and Community Services, said: ‘John Howard will bring much-needed commercial, systems and organisational expertise to the health and community services modernisation and transformation programme.

‘He will update the strategy to help us to realise the promised benefits and value for money that the programme was established to deliver.’

According to the government spokeswoman, both appointments were made in line with States employment board procedures and both will be paid subject to the government’s senior leadership pay scales.

A director of adult social care is also shortly due to be appointed. The role will include supporting adult mental health and improving integration between community adult care and hospital services.
