Woman hit drunk man with her shoe

First-time offender Gillian Mary Neil (58), of Brooklyn Street, admitted committing a grave and criminal assault at her home on the evening of Monday 7 May and was sentenced to three months’ probation.

Outlining the case in the Magistrate’s Court, Centenier David Webber said that the woman initially phoned the police at about 8.20 pm and then made a second call at about 9.20 pm requesting assistance to remove the man.

A police officer turned up at about 9.25 pm and could hear shouting coming from the window of the property.

‘He heard a man shout “Ow, that hurts”,’ said Centenier Webber.

When the officer went into the flat he found the man bleeding on the bed.

When questioned, Neil told the police that she had waited over an hour for an officer to come to help and had got so frustrated that she ended up hitting the man.

The court heard that she punched him a number of times to the shoulder as he lay face down on the bed, once to the face and then twice with the heel of the brown leather shoe.

She said she stopped when she saw the blood.

The victim refused to make a complaint but the Hospital confirmed that he had superficial injuries to his nose.

Advocate Holly Brown, defending, said that Neil appreciated the seriousness of the offence and her client was ‘truly sorry’. The advocate said Neil should be given credit for her frankness ‘as she effectively wrote her own charge sheet’ as there was no complaint from the victim.
