Same-sex weddings available in weeks?

The Privy Council signed off the amended law on 23 May, making way for the marriages, and an Appointed Day Act has been put on the order paper for next Tuesday’s sitting of the States.

A States spokesman said that dependent on the outcome of that debate, the law could be in place on 1 July.

Vic Tanner Davy, chairman of the equality charity Liberate, said he was aware of a number of couples who had planned
to marry in the days following the new law.

He said he believed the couples wished to remain private and that the first ceremony might be a small celebration at one of the their homes.

‘Obviously it feels terrific that we have reached this point and can finally see these couples getting married in our Island.

‘It’s long overdue,’ Mr Tanner Davy said.

The earliest that weddings under the newly amended Marriage and Civil Status Law can take place will be 7 July.

The Office of the Superintendent Registrar has been carrying out preliminary administrative work with couples intending to marry once the law is in place.

This includes couples hoping to marry outdoors or in humanist ceremonies, as well as same-sex couples. These couples have been working with an amended notice period in order to move forwards as quickly as possible.

Mr Tanner Davy said Liberate was not planning any special events to mark same-sex marriages passing the final hurdle, as there had been too many false starts.

‘No one wants to chance it in case something happens,’ he said.

With Alderney having celebrated its very first same-sex wedding on Saturday, Jersey will become the third Channel Island where gay couples are formally able to wed.

Same-sex weddings have been taking place in Guernsey for more than a year.
