Checkout worker who took cash from till given probation

First-time offender Dylan Little (20), of Craig Street, was sentenced for nine charges of criminally stealing cash totalling at least £680 between 25 October and 2 November last year from the Co-op’s Don Street store.

Outlining the case in the Magistrate’s Court, Centenier Philip Coffey said that Little was caught on Friday 3 November when the store manager became aware of a discrepancy in the takings.

He studied CCTV footage of the check-outs and Little was seen taking money from the till and putting it in his pocket.

Little was then interviewed by the police and admitted taking cash from his employer over a period of two to three weeks. He told police that he could not be certain of the total amount but estimated that it was between £800 and £1,200.

Centenier Coffey said that there was a compensation claim of £980 from the Channel Islands Co-operative Society but Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris said that the figure of £680 detailed in the charges was the correct amount on which to base the order.

Sentencing had previously been delayed because of the preparation of psychiatric and psychological reports into the defendant.

Advocate Heidi Heath, defending, said that Little was appreciative of the work that had been carried out to support him.

In sentencing, Mr Harris said that due to information contained in the social inquiry report, he would take an exceptional course of action and follow the recommendation of the imposition of a period of probation.

‘Usually when someone takes money from their employer, we are talking about a breach of trust and in many cases we are talking about going immediately to custody,’ he said.

He told Little that he must comply with the orders of the Probation department, who he said would help him get back into work. ‘This is your first time in court and we hope it will be your last,’ he said.
