Car park used by beachgoers is to be closed for a month

The upper car park at Portelet, which is leased to the Randalls pub group by a private owner, will close temporarily to enable the occupants of a neighbouring property to store containers there while work is carried out at their site. It is due to reopen on 2 July.

The other car park in the area is not open to the general public.

Concerns have been raised by a nearby beach café who say that they have received complaints from Islanders and tourists about the closure, which comes at the start of the peak holiday season.

A spokeswoman for Randalls – which runs the nearby Portelet Inn – say that they had warned Islanders of the closure in an advert in the JEP last Friday.

She also said that the company leased the site and had allowed beachgoers and customers of the beach café to use the car park as a gesture of goodwill since 1992. ‘The top car park has been leased by the Portelet Inn since 1992, for which Randalls pay rent,’ she said.

‘Signs and fencing were placed around the top car park on 22 May. However, due to the late arrival of containers the car park was reopened to the public.’

In a post on their Facebook page, nearby business Portelet Bay Café questioned why the whole car park needed to be fenced off.

‘We have received many complaints that the upper car park at Portelet has been fenced off,’ they said.

‘We do not know why the Portelet Inn has decided to fence off the entire car park, and we are sorry to all those who are trying to reach the bay.

‘This has always been a car park that the public have used to access the bay, regardless of our establishment.’

Portelet Inn have confirmed that their other car park, to the west of their premises, remains open to patrons but not beachgoers or beach café customers. Buses are still serving the area as normal and alternative parking is available a short walk away at the nearby Portelet Common and Noirmont.
