The Jersey Round Island Challenge – which is due to take place on 14 July – is now in its third year and includes professional prize money to attract seeded high-profile contenders from around the world.
Last year around 200 people took part to swim, canoe/kayak, row, stand-up paddle board or run around Jersey’s coastline.
Organisers of the challenge, which raises money for the Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation, are now looking for a local firm to sponsor this year’s event, which they hope could help put Jersey on the sporting map in a similar way to last year’s Super League Triathlon.
Discovery Channel adventurer Mr Conway made history when he became the first person to run, cycle and swim from Land’s End to John o’ Groats.
In 2015 he joined Jersey’s leading sailor Phil Sharp to sail the same route and set the maiden record for the tip-to-tip challenge.
Mr Conway plans to run the 48-mile route around Jersey just a week before he gets married.
Simon O’Donoghue, one of the founders of the challenge, said: ‘Sean is no stranger to the Island and we know that many will want to run alongside him while the rest of us swim, paddle or row – his last challenge was to circumnavigate Britain’s 4,000-mile coastline so we expect he will take it in his stride.’
Aidan McAvinue, co-founder and chairman of the Grace Crocker Family Support Foundation, added: ‘Our event is renowned for being safe and well organised by the team at 3D Events and has a great family feel – all proceeds go to charity and the cause is close to many Islanders’ hearts.
‘The event proceeds pay the costs of a full-time liaison manager for families of Jersey children who need treatment abroad, and we need as many people involved as possible.’
He added that all water events are organised by local clubs with the run open to solo or relay team runners with a range of distances available for all capabilities.
SUP Racer magazine, which has a global audience and tens of thousands of followers on social media, also plans to once again cover the event. And Condor Ferries has offered competitors travelling to the Island 20 per cent off travel.
The charity was launched in 2011 by Islanders Sara and Nigel Crocker in memory of their daughter Grace, who died of a heart condition in 2009 aged just 11 weeks.
Earlier this year it launched Family First, which the event helps to pay for, with the aim of bridging the gaps between health services and the families of children who need medical treatment in the UK.
The organisation is separate from the charity but funded by it, and is run by family liaison manager Cheryl Dolbel, who works with families and service providers.
